Bluesky Advice for Content Creators
Bluesky is different than other platforms you're used to! There is no main algorithm that drives discoverability or virality in the way that Instagram or Twitter do and some of your tricks from other platforms will get you into trouble here.
Here's some advice to get you started:
- Don't "drop and dash" (log in just to post and then leaving without interacting). Not interacting on the platform at all is really only a viable strategy if you plan to fully automate your posting schedule, as saving a ton of time might make the lack of interaction penalty worth it for you. I don't recommend this for long stretches of time though because Bluesky is a platform that really rewards authenticity. You aren't penalized here for sharing content outside your niche, so reposting memes, sharing text posts, responding to followers etc. are all important parts of showing your personality and building your brand and will only boost your engagement and visibility on the platform.
- Don't underestimate feeds. Currently, hashtags and your own following drive most of the engagement on Bluesky but feeds are growing quickly and can put you in front of lots of new people. Search for feeds relevant to your niche on Bluesky or via Goodfeeds.co and make sure you're meeting the criteria to get your posts included on them.
- Follow 'babe pages' in your niche. Babe pages are repost / promo pages for content creators that can give you a significant boost and add you to an exclusive network of feeds. Each page has a different application process and requirements. For example, this babe page RealGirls.blue is only for girls, RealMilfs.love is only for MILFs, and AltBabes.online is only for alt babes but there are also more all inclusive pages like RealNSFW.social and GoneWild.social too. If you belong to a niche creator community, you can also create a new babe page for your niche and then repost whoever you want on it.
- You can can and should use links (in moderation). 🔗 There is no penalty for posting links on Bluesky the way there is on Twitter. You shouldn't spam your links in every post, but using them in moderation in posts you expect to get a lot of reposts will dramatically increase your link clicks.
- Vary your hashtags with every post. Hashtags cannot shadowban you on Bluesky, so they should absolutely be part of your posting strategy. I recommend using 5-10 relevant hashtags in almost all of your image posts. Using a scheduling tool like Publer will let you see which hashtags perform best so you can refine your strategy as your Bluesky platform grows. Do NOT use irrelevant hashtags (like #stockings on a photo of you in a bikini 🙃) and make sure that the top posters in the hashtags are in your niche. Some hashtags are more or less popular among creators in your niche, so do your research beforehand unless you want to wind up in front of an audience that's not going to be interested in you at all.
- Repost queues are key. 🔑 Tumblr girlies know the value of a curated repost queue. It gives your post a much longer lifespan, lets you recycle old content and makes your account seem active even when you're reading a book in a bubble bath. The only scheduling tool I've found that lets you queue Bluesky reposts is Publer and it's an amazing tool with a bunch of other great features too! You can also queue up good morning posts, memes, reposts of your besties or anything else that would allow you to free up more time for other tasks or hobbies.
- Use an aesthetic landing page. ✨ Space in bio is limited and you don't want to overwhelm people with too many options. Link to your main site and use a clean, aesthetic landing page for the rest. I love Carrd because it's easy to use, customizable, integrates perfectly with Google Analytics and you can easily duplicate your existing landing page if you want to A/B track with different links or domains.
- You don't need to use repost groups. 🔁 There's no such thing as a shadowban on Bluesky so these groups aren't necessary the way they were on Twitter. They can give you a big boost in visibility but they can also clutter your profile and dilute your brand so think carefully about whether or not this is a good choice for you.
- If you want a boost, consider buying promo instead. 💰 There are not a lot of people offering promo sales right now, but I expect that to change big time in 2025. I offer very affordable promo on the RealGirls.blue account via Blossm and other models are beginning to advertise promo packages too. You definitely do not need to buy promo to be successful on Bluesky but it can be helpful initially to kickstart your progress on the site and should be fairly affordable in comparison to buying promo on other social media sites.
- You can sell promo too! 🎁 If you've built a big and engaged following, this is a great way for you to earn extra money on the side and boost other creators.
- Don't act like a bot. 🤖 Mass following, spam liking replies in other people's comments sections, spamming your link, using the same caption or hashtags on repeat, reposting the same content daily - these are all things that you might be used to doing elsewhere but may get you labeled as 'spam' or added to block lists on Bluesky.
